From Villas:
"This year was a really "baby boom" in my little circle of friends... I got really touched more than one time when I had this nice surprise hearing that a big friend was becoming a father/mother... That really inspired me in a production of a serie of graffiti attacks called "my little playground", that is all about kids playing arround.
I´m sending some photos of my last one as my christmas card so we can share this love with all the childrens of our lives and for the children that whe have inside as well...:) This piece is a special tribute to love and it´s dedicated to Lola, Bruna, Marti y Lluc, Theo, Miguel, Antonio Laudo, Pedro, Gustavo e Eduardo, Vitória, Violeta, Antonio Pedro, Beatriz and all kids of your friends too!" Have a nice christmas and a wonderful 2010!"
It's hard to believe this is the 13th year we've had the big holiday blow-out, but it's always a great time. We ended up with 40 guests, and no food left by the end of the night, which made clean-up easier. Having said that, we didn't get to bed until after 4am. ;)
We actually finished cooking with 45 minutes to spare -- which has never happened before. It seemed that everyone showed up at the same time this year, so it was still a rush to get everything on the table at the same time. Huge thanks to Niki for helping with mini-burger assembly line!
Now, onto the pictures, descriptions and accounts of the party with the express written consent of Major League Baseball...

The main table, clockwise from the bottom left: (hiding behind the sleigh full of forks) Quinoa & Black Bean Salad, Lentil & Soyrizo Spoons, Orzo Salad, Mini-Burgers & BBQ Tofu Lollipops, Olives and Caperberries, Roasted Potatoes with Rosemary, (hidden behind the triple Tofu Salad tier) Baguette & Tapanade, (also hidden) Stuffed Mushrooms, Artichoke Dip & Pita Bread, Seitanic Chili, Curry Tofu Phyllo Cups and White Bean Cassoulet.

The main table (from the left side): bottom to top -- Roasted Potatoes, Artichoke Dip & Pita Bread, Seitanic Chili, White Bean Cassoulet

Mini-Burgers & BBQ Tofu Lollipops (can't have a party without either one of them)

Tofu Salad Sandwiches -- my favorite part is the next day when I get to eat all the crusts that are cut off to make the triangles. ;)

Orzo Salad -- the orzo is tossed with a vinaigrette (champagne vinegar and olive oil) with salt, pepper, scallions, parsley and red bell pepper cut into a very small dice.

Roasted Fingerling Potatoes with Rosemary

Artichoke Dip and Pita Bread

Kalamata Olive and Sun-Dried Tomato Palmiers -- a new dish this year, puff pastry filled with a mixture of kalamata, sun-dried tomato and garlic, which is baked.

Lentil & Soyrizo Spoons -- a 2:1 mix of lentils and soyrizo with a little garlic, onion and diced carrot.
I missed getting the dessert table this time -- everyone wanted to start eating -- but it included chocolate mini-cupcakes, eggnog cookies and snickerdoodles.

December 24th, 2009: It's true, Dinosaur Comics got personified last night and wished everyone an awesome new year. I do too! This is where I take my MINI CHRISTMAS VACATION: there'll be no new comic Christmas Day, and I'll be running Klassik Komicks until January 1st, 2010 (next Friday!) So it's really just four Klasik Komix. I keep spelling "Klassick Kowmics" differently each time because they're that classic! Have fun, everyone, and thank you for making 2009 one of my best years ever. It's still amazing that I get to do this comic instead of having a real job, and it's all thanks to you guys. – Ryan

Title: Money makes the merry-go-round
Date: 21st December 2009

Twelve carousel horses created from recent issues of The Financial Times, with garlands made from replicated international bank notes. The bucking and galloping horses sit upon golden poles, circling the area. Reflecting the ups and downs of the world’s stock market, and financial climate. The carousel placed in London's financial district of Bank reflects on the city as a financial playground.
The Ghostvillage Project from Agents Of Change on Vimeo.
The Ghostvillage Project was created over 3 days on the west coast of Scotland. 6 artists - Timid, Remi/Rough, System, Stormie Mills, Juice 126, Derm - were given free reign to paint in an abandoned 1970s village.
If you're in Los Angeles, today (Wednesday) is the final day to see Chile Estyle, Pablo Aravena's wonderfully curated street art show at the Carmichael Gallery. It's the first time anyone has mounted a show of this kind in the US. Artists include Cekis and Inti, Horate, La Robot de Madera and Agotok.

December 22nd, 2009: Guys I got SO MANY great footers, and just in time, because winter just started here in Canada! Here's the ones I got:
– Ryan | |||
Why is it ok to take down someone else's work (/advertisement) and put my work up instead:
The message of this work is not "buy! buy! buy!" it is "look, enjoy, think, like, don't like, form an opinion." It engages viewers in a dialogue which advertisements do not. Each piece of art put in a public space, in place of an ad, is an opportunity for viewers to reconnect with the space they inhabit.
I didn't sign this work:
If this poster were an advertisement for me-as an artist-it would be just as problematic as a conventional, legally paid for ad. Jordan Seiler uses this quote from Lewis Hyde's The Gift to describe his work: "unlike economic exchange, a gift has no expectation of return." As a gift to the city, I have no expectation that this work will garner recognition or accolades. It was a very small way to change a very large cityscape. It was perhaps a utopian gesture which has the potential to lead to more concretely efficacious ones.
Just getting my feet wet:
As I prepared for my project (reading about street art, about Jordan Seiler's work, about resident/public-space interaction) the holes in it became quite clear to me. I'm not sure such an obviously political work is the best use of reappropriated ad space; it's a case of the message is the medium; I think just putting a piece of art in a space conventionally used for advertisements is enough of a message itself. Or perhaps I just needed to put my work in a more specific location---out side the TimeWarner center or maybe even very close to a news stand. My lack of experience entering the instillation limited me in some ways in these options.

December 21st, 2009: I received some amazing winter footers! I'll leave this up one more day and put up the winner tomorrow. Thanks every! And here's what I'm talking about (from Friday): Okay so it's WINTER and I've still got that fall footer at the bottom of the page. Just like what I did for fall, I'm having a winter footer contest. Send me your best 1000x96 (it can be a bit taller if you want) image that loops, and I'll pick the winner and put it up on the site! Also, if you send in a URL I'll link to your URL with your submission. Here's the fall version and the fall background image I use for looping. When I say "loops" I mean that the left-hand side of the image is the same as the right-hand side of the image, so when they're tiled horizontally they go together nicely. The background image is just repetitive part of the larger image without much detail to it that I can use for tiling. Send them in if you're interested, and thanks! – Ryan
Q: I read on the internet that “I Saw You” was optioned by DreamWorks. Whaaa?
A: What DreamWorks picked up was the screenwriter’s pitch and the studio behind it, and really has very little to do with the book. The final product will probably be completely unrelated and at this point I have nothing to do with it, by choice. Anything you might read about it in the future is in context to them, not me. This story line will not be appearing in any future comics.
Q: So what are you working on then?
A: I just finished a book (er, graphic novel?) called Drinking at the Movies which will be released in Fall 2010 by Three Rivers Press and have started on the next one, release date TBA.
Q: Are you ever going to start updating regularly like you used to?
A: No. I’ll try to post a comic at least once a week, but it’s highly unlikely that fartparty.org will closely follow the events in my life in the way it used to.
A: Whyyy?
Q: Because the comics I make are autobiographical, I’ve grown increasingly uncomfortable with having immediate situations posted on the internet, and some of the things I never want to see on the internet, just in future books. However the new comics I post soon should still give you a general idea and I’ll continue to update my flickr and facebook pages, if you’re really that bored at work. Because the other day I dreamed up the “beer waffled donut” and you’d hate to miss that brilliant idea, no?
If you have any more questions, you can post them in the comments and I’ll try to answer them. Other than that, it’s now officially snowing which means winter is here and I gotta get busy puttin’ on “nature’s jacket.” (5lbs of winter weight) Merry Christmas!
update: Craig: Is Drinking at the Movies going to be available directly from you or only from the publishers/Atomic Books? And is the Fart Party Volume 1 ever going to be re-printed?
I’ll have a few copies at the beginning but after that, only from the regular publishers/bookstores/amazon route. The publishers of this one are not Atomic Books though, but I assume they’ll carry some as well. Vol 1 is being reprinted sometime next year, date TBA.

EL CAMINOxEXIST 1981xTOCAYO from EXIST1981 on Vimeo.
Cuban-born illustrator (Tocayo) collaborates with San Diego street artist (Exist 1981) on El Camino restaurant in Little Italy, SD.
From David:
"I was recently invited by Vhils to Lisbon as a guest painter at the annual VSP (Visual Street Performance) show. VSP is an annual live painting event which takes place in the Portuguese cities of Porto and Lisbon. This year VSP took over a huge semi-derelict school in the heart of Lisbon to be decorated by a host of Portuguese talent (including Vhils, Hium, Klit, Mosaik and more) Previous guests include CASE, Xenz, Sickboy.
I spent an amazing 5 days there painting, meeting all the crew, eating great seafood and talking to some very passionate and inspiring artists and art lovers. Thanks to all that made it a great trip."
Show runs 26th Nov - 20th Dev 2009
From Above:
"After five weeks of riding my bike around Portland interviewing the homeless, I'm finally finished with this passionate NON-PROFIT project I have been working on to support and bring awareness to the homeless crisis here in Portland, and in general. I recently made a screen printed edition of 100 prints that are priced to sell to get more people involved and support this benevolent fundraiser. My goal is to raise $5,000 to donate before the end of the year to the TRANSITION PROJECTS homeless shelter here in Portland, Oregon.

December 16th, 2009: ITEMS OF NOTE: The Child's Play charity auction for a T-Rex Squishable is ending in just a few hours! Dinosaur Comics stuff ordered today isn't guaranteed to make it in time for Christmas, unless you're shipping to the States and you choose USPS DOMESTIC EXPRESS shipping. You can still order to non-US addresses however, and some of it still might get there in time! CHRISTMAS IS A TIME OF MIRACLES. (NO PROMISES ON THE MIRACLES THOUGH) The Project Wonderful ad to the right is currently showing this image which links here, and I've got to say that I find this entirely charming and I love all my readers, but ESPECIALLY the ones who do stuff like this. I hope you enjoyed these three ITEMS OF NOTE. – Ryan
